Message from Jon Rawson, Commodore | |||||||||||
| I would like to welcome you to the Shearwater Sailing Club web site. We are a friendly family orientated dinghy sailing club and we also hold social events for our members. We sail on Shearwater Lake with the kind permission of the seventh Marquis of Bath, who is our club President. The club is affiliated to the Royal Yachting Association and is a Community Amateur Sports Club. The club is operated entirely by volunteers for the benefit of the members. Membership is open to all and the cost is kept as low as is possible to encourage access. Those who are already involved in the sport of dinghy sailing will know what a sociable and friendly pastime it is. A wide variety of boat classes are sailed at Shearwater and all are welcome. Some of the members sail boats that they have been given or cost very little. Others choose to spend more on their hobby. Racing takes place on Sundays between March and November and on Tuesday evenings throughout the summer. Those who wish to just potter about can do so at any time subject to minimum safety requirements being met. The club has strong links with both West Wiltshire Youth Sailing Association and the Classic and Vintage Racing Dinghy Association. If you are interested in dinghy sailing and would like to know more about Shearwater Sailing Club, I invite you to come along to the club and meet us. A Sunday or a Tuesday when racing is taking place may be the best time. Please browse this web site and do feel free to contact me, the Membership Secretary or any other committee member. I wish you fair winds for 2008. Jon Rawson Commodore |

SAILING REPORT as of 1st June 2008 Two Series and one Day Event have now been completed. Giles Penfold was the clear winner of the Bristol Goblet with Chris Mulholland winning the Spring Pursuit and Catherine Honor taking the Spring Points trophy. Congratulations to these three sailors. The Tuesday "A" series has so far attracted the largest number of sailors with 21 boats having participated. John Putt in his Albacore is presently in pole position and appears to be unstoppable. It is good to see many new sailors taking part in this Series. The Category System provides encouragement to new sailors and gets them taking part. Also by using the Average Lap method of recording results sailors are ensured that they will finish the race in good time regardless of how experienced they are. We want to encourage new members to try racing their boats and Tuesday evenings are a good way to start. Happy sailing! Colin Newton (sailing committee) |
