This year many events at Shearwater Sailing Club have been published on ‘Facebook’ and I’d like to thank the authors of these posts for their contributions. Here is a sample of some of my favourites:

Mike Jones  9 March

A very good turn out for a lovely sunny day’s sailing on Shearwater – a little more wind and it would have been perfect. Thanks to Will, Eddie and Richard for undertaking OOD, AOOD and Safety Boat duties. Martin H. kindly brought the Champagne and Chocolates that were our prizes from the Fitting Out Supper raffle…

John Stuckey 30 March

Bristol goblet. 15 boats competing today. (with a great photo..)

Mike Jones 12 April

Topper & Comet Open at Shearwater today. Lots of boats and people enjoying themselves as they prepare to race, when I dropped Fraser off this morning. The wind is good and they look set to have a great day. (Picture of jetty mobbed by Toppers)

On Saturday 17th May the Club is taking part in the RYA Push the Boat Out weekend of national events to encourage more people to get out the water. At Shearwater we will be providing dinghy taster sessions from 10am – 3pm and opportunity for the public to view the Club and discuss ways of getting started including types of dinghy and essential kit. Volunteers are required to helm double handers, provide rescue boat cover and assist with providing light refreshments. This is a great opportunity to encourage new Members….

Racing at Shearwater 11 May 2014 with Mike, Chris and Fraser carrying out pre-launch checks!!! (Post included photo courtesy of Tessa Welbourn of two Lasers capsized on the pontoon.) Well done to all those who managed to get out on the water today in such exceptional conditions.

A change to the fixture list for this month is to be made. The home fixture of the Gilmer Trophy competed for between our Club and Bristol Avon Sailing Club planned for Sunday 25th May has been re scheduled to take place in 2015. Unfortunately the original date being over the Bank Holiday weekend and half term holiday caused an issue with team availability for both Clubs. The away fixture at Bristol Avon will still take place as planned later this year on 21st September. When BASC come to us in 2015 they will be celebrating their 60th Anniversary.

The good news is that we will be holding a one off “Not the Gilmer” single day trophy event for Members on Sunday 25th May.

Martyn Stubbs 26th May

Sunday 1st June will be the Commodores Trophy consisting of three races with best two to count. This is one of our single day trophy events and I hope you will be able to compete or come along to watch. I have already booked the weather, and tea and cakes will be available afterwards.

Here is the link to our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/5300907 23719013/ There are lots more photos and it’s there for everyone to use. If you’ve got a boat to sell, have an amazing photo of Shearwater, or need some crew at the last minute, then give it a try.

Next up is our trip to Roadford Lake on 7th and 8th June, the Ladies and Junior’s Day on 28th June and plenty more events. Each year I enjoy Shearwater more and more. It’s the members that make it special so ‘Hold Your Course!’

See you on the water, Peter Barnes, May 2014.
